Our Favorite Hip Hop Wives and Girlfriends

Let's admit it, we're fascinated by the domestic lives of male entertainers. Reality shows like "Basketball Wives," "Football Wives," and now VH1's "Love and Hip Hop," are turning the women that stand behind celebrity men into semi-famous celebs themselves. Dating a rapper, let alone having a child or being a wife, is no easy feat, however, there are more than a few women who hold it down. Black Love: Oprah and Stedman Through the Years

Oprah and StedmanNo Ordinary LoveRumor has it that Oprah Winfrey's ex-boyfriendReginald Chevalier is still bent out of shape over their relationship that ended years ago. He claims that Oprah only dumped him in 1985, because she started seeing her longtime boyfriend Stedman Graham. Reginald might want to start letting it go. For the last 25 years Oprah has been connected to Stedman and for the last 25 years the public can't seem to get enough of their tight lipped relationship. In the last year, Oprah has opened about this part of her life, proving that long-term couples can be happy living non-traditionally, without marriage and children. See how it works for them...SmittenOprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham began dating back in 1986, after Graham'a failed marriage and and Oprah's failed relationship and scandal with ex-boyfriend Randolph Cook.I Got Your BackOprah went through a depressing time in the 80s when someone sold her out to the tabloids for $20,000. When Stedman showed he was truly there for her, she knew she loved him. "Here is someone who is willing to stand in and stand up for you. And that is love," she said.Stud-manNew Jersey native Stedman — standing at 6'6 — was not only a college basketball star, but at one point a successful sportswear model. Graham is currently the CEO of S. Graham & Associates, a Chicago-based corporate and educational marketing and consulting firm. You FancyIn the beginning of their courtship Oprah Winfrey and Stedman Graham were always spotted out and about. The two look glamorous at an award gala at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in NYC in 1987.Yea I'm With HimIn the 80s Stedman was the epitome of handsome. Oprah recalls him being so good looking that her staffers questioned his intentions. "They figured if he looked like that, he either had to be a jerk or want something."My RockGraham and Winfrey were engaged in 1992 to be married September 1993, but later canceled, deciding that they would rather have a "spiritual union."Just Me and My ManOprah says she has no regrets whatsoever about never having children, "I never had a desire. And I don't think I could have this life and have children. I do feel like I am a mother in a broader sense, to a generation of viewers who've grown up with me."A Real ManStedman has said, "[I'm a] man in a relationship with a very powerful woman. I'm not threatened by her fame, her success, her money; that's who she is. It has nothing to do with how I define myself."Just Kicking ItOprah admits that her relationship with Stedman is quite normal. Here the talk show host and her boo walk their dogs at a park near Winfrey's home in Downtown Chicago.Give Me A KissMarriage or no marriage, Oprah Winfrey and Stedman have been going strong for 26 years.Stuck Like GlueBack in 2008 rumors started to swirl that Oprah and her Steddy called it quits. Oprah went on record in 2010 and said that rumor was the furthest thing from the truth, and they still are going strong.Believe It or NotIn 25 years on the air, Oprah says Stedman has only attended three shows-including one of the annual "Favorite Things" finale.Support SystemIn an interview with Barbara Walters in 2010, Oprah went on record saying "I do not know another man on this planet who could have lived this life with such dignity, such grace, and such respect and humility in it, and still hold his own and be his own."Love Birds"I think people are fascinated with the relationship because you haven't seen him. People want to know what is it? Is it real? What is it really like? What are they really like together? And when you see it, it's quite normal," Oprah says.Don't Get It TwistedIn that same exclusiveinterview with Barbara Walters in 2010, Oprah declare Stedman is still "the love, the lover, the man, the partner, the mate" of her life.

5 Questions for Da Brat on Prison and Nicki Minaj

In 2008, rapper Shawntae "Da Brat" Harris was sentenced to three years behind bars, seven years of probation and 200 hours of community service for striking a woman in the face with a bottle. The incident occurred at an Atlanta-area nightclub and left the victim's face permanently scarred. Harris served her time, and earlier this week was released on house arrest. The very elated rapper chatted with ESSENCE.com about what she learned, her reality show, and Nicki Minaj... Here's what you had to say: Christa commented via Facebook: "She and Missy need to hit the studio ASAP." Gee wrote via Facebook: "Wow. Has it been three years already?"

Celebs Who Shouldn't Be Singing

Celebs Who Shouldn't Be in the Singing BoothTurn the Volume Down...When it was announced that Kim Kardashian was in the studio working on album we were all surprised to learn of the news. Doubly surprised to find out uber-producer Terius "The Dream" Nash would do most of the production. With the Dream's track record there was a slight chance that Kim could solidify her place in our minds as a singer. However, based on her first single "Jam," we aren't to sure if Kim is ready to take the stage-or if she should even get back in the booth. Kimmy isn't the only celebrity who has been ambitious enough to venture into music, with horrible results. Here are a few celebrities who still have us saying, "Really?"Eddie MurphyAlthough Eddie Murphy's 1985 track "Party All The Time," was a hit, and he later teamed up with MJ for an collabo album, hearing the funny man attempt to sing seemed like a bad joke.Kim ZolciackWith lots of help from Kandi Burress, Kim Z. made "Tardy for the Party" a catchy hit, but we still think she can't sing a lick.Kim KardashianKim"s newest single "Jam (Turn it up)," wasn't really the jam-and we're still trying to turn it down.Jada PinkettUsually Ms. Pinkett-Smith can do no wrong. However, she raised our eyebrows when she decided to venture into rock. Let's just say joining the rock metal band Wicked Wisdom, was a little more wicked than wise.Naomi CampbellCampbell's debut album, "Baby Woman" was greeted with groans when released in the UK. The project never made it to the US, more than likely because because it sold 20 copies in her native country.Tyra BanksWhen America's Top Model was at it's peak of success, Tyra Banks thought it would be a great idea to premiere her first single "Shake Your Body" on the show. It was so bad the album was never released, and even Tyra admitted her failure on her talk show years later.Esther RolleBest known for her maternal role of the show, "Good Times," Rolle tried the music thing in 1975 with her gospel inspired album, "The Garden Of My Mind." Out of respect, if we can't say anything nice, we won't say anything at all.Shaquille O'NealShaq aka Superman thought he could conquer the rap world like he conquers the court. With five studio albums and one compilation album, we think he could of made better use of his time practicing his free throws.

Top 2011 Grammy Moments

Best 2011 Grammy MomentsA Moment Like ThisToday is Valentine's day, and one thing's for sure we were in love with the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards that aired on CBS last night.Held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the show may have lacked a host to move everything along, but it still became a night to remember. Whether it was Usher and Justin Bieber dancing down memory lane, Jennifer Hudson breaking it down for Aretha Franklin or Rihanna appearing on stage in a flame-inspired Dior gown, the 3.5 hour long award show was filled with everyone doing the most! ESSENCE.com takes a look at the strangest, most fashionable and most memorable moments of the evening...Nicki Minaj Loves Leopard PrintLast night was such an avante garde moment for fashion, that rapper Nicki Minaj — who usually baffles us with her styling choices — ended up appearing pretty tame (Who could top Gaga in an egg?). Wearing all-leopard-everything, yes we mean everything (romper, gloves, leggings, boots, and even hair), Nicki left us underwhelmed. We woke up this morning not asking why did she wear that, but who was the poor person who had to sit behind that hair all evening?Lady Gaga is HatchedOnly Lady Gaga could make an entrance on the red carpet and on stage in human-sized egg. Lauriann Gibson, Gaga's creative director and Diddy's former choreographer explained it saying, "She's has been incubating for sometime now for her performance, we must hurry off because she's dilating." What? It's too bad that when she "birthed" herself on stage, the performance left many wanting more. The Fantastic FiveAretha Franklin was unable to attend the Grammy's this year, but still had the honor of the award show opening up with a tribute to her.Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride, Yolanda Adams, and Florence Welch all took the stage to salute the Queen of Soul. Every single person especially J. Hud and Yolanda Adams gave us chills and did Mama Franklin justice.Long Live the PompadourIn what could be described as the best musically entertaining performance of the night, singers Janelle Monae and Bruno Mars, along with rapper B.o.B set the stage on fire. After Bruno Mars surprised us playing the drums and Janelle took us to church singing "Cold War," one question remained. Whose pompadour hairstyle was the biggest and the best?Cee-Lo Stole the ShowCee-Lo had his moment last night! Airing on CBS, Cee-lo was completely dressed like the NBC bird with multi colors feathers, a bedazzled helmet, white sunglasses, and a silver breastplate. His censored Muppets, and actress Gwenyth Paltrow dancing on his piano in a body suit and stunning shoes brought the Grammy Awards back to life. Cee-Lo Green's performance was so unforgettable it should have been him, and not Gaga, jumping out that egg.Rihanna Left Us Wanting MoreRihanna is a wonder to look at-and she knows it.From her guady but amazing black and yellow Dior couture dress and her "Love The Way You Lie Part 2," performance with Eminem, to her revealing red two-piece outfit for her "What's My Name," performance with Drake-Rihanna looked fierce. However, no matter how she styled her hair, or how much her whining skills improved, we weren't blind to the fact that Rihanna's vocals came up short.Teddy Pendergrass TributeSince Teddy Pendergrass' death last year, the Grammy committee had been remiss to pay tribute to the soul legend. So we guess Grammy producers thought it be a good idea to have the country trio, Lady Antebellum, (winners of Song and Record of the Year), sing about 30-seconds worth of his song, "If You Don't Know Me By Now," in his honor. Fail! Teddy P. deserved more than that, and we know Tyrese was somewhere fuming in his seat feeling cheated.Esperanza is "Best New Artist""Best New Artist," is one of the most coveted awards of the night, and this year's list of nominees included both Drake and Justin Bieber. Most people placed their bets on Bieber to take home the trophy, so it was a total shocker when Esperanza Spalding's name was called as winner. One of the biggest upsets in Grammy history, the 26-year-old jazz bassist snatched the Grammy and for once the underdog ended up victorious. If the Grammys had hopes to renew music lovers' interest in the show and get them excited again, this win accomplished that. Congrats to Esperanza! Here's what you had to say: Jessica commented via Facebook: "Jennifer Hudson looked awesome and I loved Janelle Monae's performance." Tiffany wrote via Facebook: "I loved Gwenyth Paltrow's shoes. Cee Lo's performance was the 'ish.'"

Women We'd Love to See Play Aretha Franklin

Women We'd Love to See Play Aretha FranklinWomen We'd Love to See Play Aretha FranklinLast year, Aretha Franklin announced she had been reviewing scripts for a possible biopic film based on her autobiography, and revealed that she wanted Oscar winner Halle Berry to play her. Berry kindly declined, saying, "I adore Aretha...ADORE her, but I'm sure she would want the actress to sing."Sounds like a "no thank you," to us, but Franklin persisted, sending Berry a message via talk show host Wendy Williams. "Many actors have portrayed vocalists by lip-synching to the artist's original recordings," the 68-year-old singer stated. As much as we see Aretha is pushing for Halle Berry, there are plenty of singers and actresses who could fit the bill. Here's who we think would R-E-S-P-E-C-T playing the role of the Queen of Soul.Jazmine SullivanThose plump cheekbones that make her resemble a young ReRe, that textured voice, and big sound make it hard not to think Jazmine Sullivan a natural choice to play Aretha Franklin.Queen LatifahIt only makes sense for a Queen to play a Queen. With Latifah's previously released singing albums, "The Dana Owens Album," and Trav'lin Light", and role in the musical "Chicago" there is no reason for anyone to question her vocals. She's also one star who could bring the big numbers in at the box office.Mo'niqueComedienne and actress for the last 12 years, Oscar winner Mo'nique proved in 2009 with the film "Precious" that although she's known for her silly side, she has a natural talent for more serious deep roles. Although she can't sing a lick, seeing Mo'nique bring mama Aretha's trials and tribulations to life would probably be piece of cake.Jennifer HudsonWhen the Aretha Franklin biopic was just a rumor, this was our number one pick for the role. Let's be honest since Hudson's Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress in "Dreamgirls," she has yet to land a role that does all of her talents justice. With a voice as powerful as Aretha, and looks to follow suit Husdon is out number one pick for an Aretha Franklin biopic.Amber RileyStar of the hit show, "Glee" Amber Riley may be a little young for the role but with the right makeup and hair, Riley has enough singing and acting talent to really make her portrayal of Franklin work.FantasiaFantasia has not only starred in a biopic of her own life, she is also involved in the reality series "Fantasia For Real," proving she has no problem being in front of the camera. Although her style is more Patti Labelle than Aretha, we are sure she would be able to make the proper adjustments considering how in real life 'Tasia credits Aretha with helping her stay strong during her suicide crisis.Jill ScottSince 2002 singer/songwriter Jill Scott has been involved in six major acting projects, which to her credit, were all successful. With a classically trained voice that leaves people in awe, Jilly from Philly is the go to girl for Franklin's sass and swag.Sharon LealWe believe Sharon could embody the role of Aretha-cherubic cheeks and all. Leal, who played in 2006,"Dreamgirls," already has experience playing the role of singer, and it would be refreshing to see her face on the big screen, because we just don't see enough of her.LaToya LondonConsidered one of the greatest "American Idol" voices, season 3 contestant LaToya London always took the competition to new levels with stunning renditions of hits like "Chain of Fools" and "Don't Rain on My Parade." Post-"Idol," London caught the acting bug and joined the cast of "The Color Purple." A singer and an actress? What a perfect combination.Kelly PriceWe love Ms. Kelly Price, because we're reminded how her talent is truly missed in the music game. With a similar gospel upbringing as Franklin, we don't doubt Kelly Price could embody the "spirit" in Aretha's vocals. Seeing Kelly on the big screen? Now, that's what you call a comeback.Regina KingWith one biopic under her belt, King successfully played the role of Ray's mistress Margie Hendricks in the film "Ray."While King may not be a singer, to Aretha point she did an awesome job lip-syncing the "Night Time is the Right Time," with such conviction we still have chills.Regina HallKnown for her unique comedic roles on all the"Scary Movie," parodies, Hall shown her acting versatility onLaw and Order: Los Angeles. Regardless if she can sing or not Hall has the classic Aretha Franklin baby faced look that would make us feel like were really watching Aretha.MandisaDuring her tenure on season 5 of "American Idol" finalist Mandisa Lynn Hundley is most memorable for her beautiful interpretations of soul classics. Like the Jennifer Hudson's breakthrough in "Dreamgirls" a role playing the Queen of Soul could be this contestant's big break.

BET's 'The Game' Episode 3 Recap

Last night's episode of "The Game" was filled with the usual "OMG!" moments, but became even more entertaining when everyone took the opportunity to deliver a slew of "don't-mess-with-me" lines. If it wasn't for Tasha Mack telling off her son Malik, it was TT going in on Malik or Melanie giving Derwin a piece of her mind. We only wish we could deliver some of these clever lines during an intense argument. With that said, take a look at the most notable and quotable lines of the night... Here's what you had to say: Martine commented via Facebook: "It's gotten so serious. I miss them cutting up with each other." Tanya wrote via Facebook: "I'm confused. 'The Game' is just not the same."

Celeb Couples Who Should Jump the Broom Next

Celebs Who Should Get MarriedIntro and Lead PhotoThere's so much going on in the world of entertainment when it comes to love and marriage. If it isn't for NBA baller Shannon Brown admitting that he and singer Monica jumped the broom in a private ceremony in November, it's model Selita Ebanks accidentally mentioning that her bestie Serena Williams and rapper Common may be engaged. Considering how so many Black celebs walked down the aisle in 2010 (a positive example for Black love, if we may say so), we're hoping a few more celebs would follow suit in 2011. Here's our wishlist of long-term celebrity couples we wish would just go on ahead and get married!Nelly and AshantiFor a pair who still hasn't technically confirmed their love since they were captured boo'd up onbeach in 2004, both Nelly,36, and Ashanti, 30, are always photographed looking way more than "just friends." We have no idea why they won't admit the obvious, but the rapper and singer need stop the fronting and just start planning the wedding.Common and Serena WilliamsSo many ladies would like the sexy Common, 38, for ourselves, that it's taken us a while to warm up to the idea of him being with tennis champ Serena Williams, 29. And just when we accepted how great the pair were, we heard of their untimely break up. The "breakup,"however didn't keep them from being photographed out together or the recent rumor (accidentally leaked by Serena' BFF Selita Ebanks) that Common liked it so much he put a ring on it. We're keeping our eyes on these two.LeBron James and Savannah BrinsonWhen Miami Heat baller LeBron James, 25, called his longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson, 24, his "sidekick" last year, women everywhere rolled their eyes. Considering Brinson is not only his high school sweetheart, but the mother of his two sons, it's about time the pair walk down the aisle because "wife" sounds better than "sidekick" any day.Regina King and Malcolm-Jamal WarnerStarlet Regina King, 40, not only graces our February cover, but also admits to a serious relationship with former Cosby Kid, Malclom-Jamal Warner,40. The two child stars, who have been dating since 2008, met in the late 80s and have very similar upbringings. C'mon Theo, she's a catch!Gabrielle Union and Dwyane WadeDwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union need to get married like yesterday. With a dating history dripping in drama and scandal (thanks to Wade's ex-wife Siovaughn calling Union a homewrecker), Wade, 27 and Union, 38, have managed to keep above the fray and have turned out to be one of our favorite celeb couples. We're excited just thinking about the celeb-studded guest list.Diddy and CassieJust like Ashanti and Nelly, both Diddy, 41, and Cassie, 23, will never confirm they are dating, but the paparazzi always seems to catch the pair together. From the tweets to the streets, people are talking about how even though Diddy is 18 years Cassie's senior, he'd get a pass to just go on and rob the cradle and make the singer/model his "official girl."Keyshia Cole and Daniel GibsonLuckily Keyshia and Daniel have already set the date for their wedding, and Keyshia has just two things on her wishlist: no drama, and a waterfall. We love it.

10 Most Talked About Moments from BET's 'The Game'

10 Most-Talked About Moments from BET's "The Game""The Game" Season PremiereLast night televisions everywhere were locked in to the season premiere of BET's "The Game," and to say the show's comeback to TV was "highly anticipated"-would be an understatement. After being canceled on the CW network, audiences who loved the show craved for more, until BET announced they were bringing it back. Now on it's fourth season the dramedy made its debut in a major way, garnering some 7.7 million viewers, a record for BET. In a matter of minutes of being on the air "The Game," and the BET network had taken every Twitter trending topic slot, and instantly we knew this season was going to be a hit. In case you missed last night's episode, here's a countdown of the most talked about moments of the show:10. Meagan Good Plays the Naughty GirlAudiences weren't the least bit surprised to see Megean Good typecast once again as the naughty girl on the season premiere of "The Game." Playing the wife of the San Diego Sabers' owner, the show opens with Goode on getting her S&M on with no other than Malik (Hosea Chanchez) in the bathroom. The show ends with her naked in hot tub cheating again with Malik and-another woman!9. Terrence J plays DontaeSpeaking of naked, we don't think anyone saw Terrence J's no shirt, towel, baby oil cameo coming. Cast to play the much younger boy toy of Tasha Mack, Dontae made everyone gasp when he slobbed down Tasha in the opening scenes helping her get her groove back. The first kiss shocked us, but by the fifth most of us were trying not to toss our cookies. Tasha and Mr.106 and Park? Say it ain't so.8. Kelly is Brand NewOff the heels of a bitter divorce, Kelly Pitts (Brittany Daniel), Jason's ex-wife returns this season with a new attitude — and fashion sense. With a new Rihanna circa 2009 haircut, fake Angelina Jolie tattoo, and a reality show — Kelly is on a mission to make Jason's life miserable and get revenge on ex-friend Tasha Mack. Gangsta looks good on Kelly.7. Malik and Jason Pitts: Boys Gone WildThis season, Jason (Coby Bell) and Malik (Chanchez) have no filters and no brakes. It's like the two are competing to see who can be the bigger douchebag. We can't decide which was worse: Malik having a threesome with his boss' wife and best friend's girlfriend or Jason trying to sabotage his ex-wife Kelly's new reality show?6. Tasha Mack's One LinersNo one can deliver a line as fiercely as Wendy Raquel Robinson, aka Tasha Mack, can. Her notable/ quotables from last night include, "Wifey-1, Baby Mama-0," and "Did Ruby Dee turn you down for a booty call?" We knew Tasha Mack was still our #1 sistah girl!5. Brand Shout OutsEssence Magazine and Nike had to break some kind of record for receiving the most plugs and shout outs in one episode of show. Of course we're ecstatic...Go Essence!4. Tee-Tee Finally Mans UpTee-Tee, Malik's cousin and former personal assistant is finally doing his own thing. In attempts to come from up under Malik's overbearing rule, he opens his own chicken cart (thanks BET!) and finds himself a love interest. While we're glad Tee-Tee is proving he's no longer Malik's flunky, we miss his comic relief.3. Tasha's Smoking SessionIt was shocking enough to even see Tasha smoking, but leave it to BET to have her puffing on a Middleton Black and Mild. Like really a cigarette couldn't suffice, you had to place the cheapest and most hood of all cigars in her hand? One step forward for Middleton, five steps back for Black people.2. Derwin, You Are Not The FatherAfter Tasha puts crazy thoughts in Melanie's head, "Med School" decides to give Derwin's now 2-year-old son a DNA test to determine Derwin's paternity. When the test results come back negative, Melanie now a housewife, can't wait to tell Derwin the news and crush his heart. However, when she finds out the results were a mistake and he is the father, she is way more hesitant to tell Derwin the real truth. It's because ofMelanie that "The Game," has become our first all Black soap opera.1. Brit-Brat is a Grown WomanMost talked about moment on the show! Brittany, affectionately known as Brit-Brat, was the pre-teen daughter of Jason and Kelly Pitts that we'd all grown to love. However when she made her appearance on last night's episode everyone tried to figure out not only why she was recast, but why she now looked 28 years old after only two years. You can't fool true fans of the show, let's get the real Brittany back before this one goes through menopause, thanks.
