The legendary Apollo theater, known for launching many of the most iconic careers in music, is celebrating its 80th anniversary with a stellar line-up for the annual Spring Gala.
According to the Huffington Post, Wayne Brady will host the star-studded evening featuring tribute performances from Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Natalie Cole and The Isley Brothers.
The summer benefit, highlighting and celebrating eight decades of an historic influence on culture and entertainment, will honor former Citigroup and Time Warner Chairman, Richard D. Parsons with the Leadership Award for his longtime involvement with the theater.
Jonelle Procope, CEO of The Apollo Theater said, “Over the past 80 years, the Apollo Theater has been constant in changing the face of popular music and culture here in Harlem and across the world. Some of the world’s most legendary artists have not only graced the stage, but were nurtured and developed at the Apollo in the beginning of their careers.”
The 80th anniversary bash will take place Tuesday, June 10 with proceeds going to the Apollo yearround performing arts program, education initiatives and community programs. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
