The queen of funk-soul, Chaka Khan is set to be honored by her hometown of Chicago for her 40 years in music and entertainment.
The ten-time Grammy-award winner will be celebrated from July 26-28 in an event that will feature the unveiling of “Chaka Khan Way,” a street located near Khan’s old high school. Chicago will also proclaim July 28th “Chaka Khan Day.”
The city wishes that Chaka Khan Way will help uplift Chicago youth.
“I hope that students will walk by that sign and want to learn more about the person behind that name,” says Carl McKenzie, President of Artworks Chicago who pushed for the street naming.
Khan attributes much of her early days of success to her hometown and its musical influence.
“Chicago is where it all began for me,” says Khan. “Even before Rufus, I sang with local groups such as the Babysitter, Lock and Chain and Lyfe. As a young girl, growing up on Carpenter Street, my parents introduced me to very rich musical foundation—starting with jazz and opera. I owe this city so much, and I’m deeply honored by this tribute.”
After the legendary songstress is honored, she’ll croon some of her hits at a free outdoor concert in Millennium Park.
“Chicago will always be a part of me, and with this street naming, I now will always be a part of it,” says Khan. “It’s a blessing to me and my family. We are profoundly grateful to all the people of Chicago.”
