ESSENCE Poll: Which Black Female TV Character Do You Identify With?

Television may not always be filled with amazing roles for women of color, but for the past few seasons we’ve seen a few refreshingly strong female characters we could identify with. Take Olivia Pope (Scandal), an intelligent, fearless, powerful and passionate Washington insider and crisis management guru with a mean pant suit and shoe game (bonus!). On Grey’s Anatomy, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) is a college grad and a top surgeon at Seattle Grey’s Hospital who has worked her way up from being a resident in general surgery to attending physician. Ambition? Check.

On AMC’s Walking Dead, Michonne (Darai Guriria) is a smart, witty, sword-wielding, zombie-fighting sister who takes no prisoners. The same could be said about Taraji P. Henson’s character on CBS’ Person of Interest — who instead of a sword is packing heat. Though she can be way too blunt for her own good, Tasha Mack on The Game is a seriously relatable, hardworking single mom who strives to rise above her difficult past and do the best for her son Malik.
