Press Play: June’s Diary Tackles Self-Worth in New Single ‘Way Off’
By Taiia Smart Young · Updated December 6, 2020

The R&B darlings of June’s Diary are ready to set the record straight with their new single “Way Off.”

In “Way Off,” the indie quintet, comprised of Ashly Williams, Gabrielle Carrerio, Brienna DeVlugt, Kristal Smith and Shyann Roberts, blend harmonies and tackle discovering self-worth in one-sided relationships—and why it’s necessary to exit these toxic situations.

The group doesn’t mince words on the midtempo offering, which includes lyrics like,“I’m losing focus, you never notice. I’m number two to you. I’m not used to it…Trying to figure out why we’re not on the same wave, baby.”

This single marks the first track co-written by the talented ladies.

As early fans of the group will remember, June’s Diary was assembled on BET’s “Chasing Destiny” docuseries, helmed by renowned choreographer and creative director Frank Gatson Jr. and songstress Kelly Rowland in 2016. The show saw Gatson and Rowland team up to find the next hit girl group and after viewing thousands of hopefuls singers, Williams, Carrerio, DeVlugt, Smith and Roberts made the cut.

In 2017, June’s Diary released the Male Edition mixtape featuring energetic covers from Jagged Edged “(Where the Party At?”), Jodeci (“Stay”) The Deele (“Two Occasions”) and more.

Before the pandemic hit and slowed their flow, the ladies released a video for their single “I Ain’t With It” and sang the Black National Anthem for Facebook’s Lift Every Voice and Sing content series during the NBA All Star Game in February. Their performance racked up more than eight million views on the app.
