With love and dating shows like Married At First Sight, 90-Day Fiancé and Ready To Love gaining increasing popularity among TV viewers, it only makes sense that production companies are turning up with new concepts. As it turns out, John Legend is capitalizing on the trend by merging music and matchmaking.
According to The Wrap, Legend’s Get Lifted Film Co. is teaming up with Critical Content and Simon Lythgoe’s Legacy Productions (producer of American Idol) to bring you Love At First Song. The music/dating show hybrid borrows its format from South Korean entertainment company CJ ENM, whose first rollout of the show in Vietnam skyrocketed to the number one show in its timeslot. Legend will serve as one of the executive producers. Love At First Song will bring together two singers who will be living, practicing and performing together, but will have the option swap partners in every episode — either for love or music. “’Love at First Song’ is really the best of two great genres: performance and dating, as contestants literally fall in love and make heartbreaking decisions during their duets,” said Critical Content’s Tom Forman and Jenny Daly. “It’s the perfect format to come from a love song legend like John, plus a producer like Simon with a proven record of launching both hit shows and huge acts.” Of course, the EGOT winner is no stranger to competition shows. He currently serves as the newest coach on the hit NBC series The Voice – sitting beside current coaches Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, and Adam Levine. Will you be watching?
