Lizzo’s career has ascended to unbelievable heights within the past couple of years. Her latest album Cuz I Love You arrived on the Billboard charts and she’s embarked on her headlining this year. In the midst of her ever-growing success, the singer and body-positive role model revealed that she still struggles with depression.

Last night, the singer let her 1.8 million followers in on the fact that she wasn’t feeling like her best self.

“I’m depressed and there’s no one I can talk to because there’s nothing anyone can do about it,” she writes in a video, adding, “Life hurts.” In the caption, the typically jovial and upbeat singer reveals, “I self-love so hard because everything feels like rejection… it feel like the whole world be ghostin me sometimes. Sad af today. But this too shall pass. S/O all the messages of love. Thank you.”

She followed up her post with a video making a tearful yet hopeful confession. “I learned in the last 24hrs that being emotionally honest can save your life,” she writes. “Reaching out may be hard but as soon as I did it, I was immediately covered in love. I used to think of sadness as a constant with fleeting moments of joy in between… but it’s a wave joy, sadness, joy, sadness, and my sadness can be as temporary as my joy.”

In her cover story interview with ESSENCE, the 31-year-old opened up about channeling her depression into lyrical content. “I wrote ‘Soulmate’ when I was in the studio and I was so depressed,” she shares. “I needed to write a song about who I wanted be so a year later when I’m rehearsing for Coachella I could say those words knowing, ‘That was the old me.’ ”

We’re sending all the virtual hugs to Lizzo!
