It looks like the Flossy Posse will be making their comeback in a Girls Trip 2 sooner than we might expect.
Regina Hall confirmed in a recent interview that the powers that be are working hard to bring a sequel to the successful 2017 hit.
“We’re trying to make that happen,” Hall told BuzzFeed News’ “AM to DM“. “So we’re trying to get everything together with the schedule. I think they’re working on something. I don’t know where we’re going. I don’t know where the girls are going, but… we’re going somewhere.”
The Malcolm D. Lee-film about a trip to ESSENCE Fest starring Hall, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, and Tiffany Haddish had a $19 million budget and made $31 million in the first weekend. It quickly crossed the $100 million mark in gross sales and became the highest grossing R-Rated comedy to hit theaters in 2017.
Latifah recently told the Washington Post that “it’s just a matter of time” before the sequel arrives: “We’re actually working it all out. I know they’re writing it and we’re all down, so it’s just a matter of time. We’re just waiting for a script, script, script, script, script, script.”
And while a destination for the next Girls Trip hasn’t been figured out, Latifah says she’s not ruling out a return to ESSENCE Fest in New Orleans.
One location that has been thrown around is a trip to ESSENCE Fest Durban, our annual festival in South Africa. And Haddish says she approves.
“I would love to see them going to Essence Fest in South Africa,” she told the Hollywood Reporter. “And they got to South Africa thinking they are going to be around some Africans and then finding out that a lot of white people live there and being in complete shock.”
The hilarious comedian added that she could even see her character, Dina, finding love abroad — with a twist, of course!
“Like Dina [asking a potential bae], “You African?” And she finds out how prejudice she might actually be and grow from that and marry a white man. Or, a white African. I am just making that up, but I would like to do South Africa.”
