The Little Mermaid live-action reboot just became a must-see.
Variety reports that Chloe x Halle singer and ESSENCE’s first-ever digital cover star Halle Bailey was just cast as Ariel in Disney’s highly anticipated film. It’ll be the singer’s film debut.
Bailey will join other cast members, including Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay, in the film. Melissa McCarthy is also in talks to play the iconic villain, Ursula. Still, we’d much rather see Lizzo in that role, and the singer has already launched a public campaign to portray the underwater sea witch.
The film—which is being produced by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, among others—will not only feature The Little Mermaid‘s classics, such as “Under the Sea,” “Part of Your World” and “Kiss the Girl,” but also original music penned by Miranda and original composer Alan Menken.
Congrats to Bailey!
