The Queen of Hip Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige has undergone a remarkable style evolution throughout her career. Blige has consistently pushed boundaries and redefined her image over and over again yet somehow has remained the same Mary. In the early years of her career, Blige was known for her street style aesthetics that many female singers and MCs were donning. During this era, she was often seen rocking baggy jeans, oversized jerseys, and signature combat boots and sneakers. As she transitioned from the gritty sound of her early albums to a more R&B-leaning soundscape, her style also underwent a transformation. She started to embrace a more glamorous aesthetic, incorporating household-name designers and bold accessories into her wardrobe.

A significant contributor to Blige’s style evolution has been her collaboration with talented stylists like the renowned Misa Hylton. Hylton played a pivotal role in shaping the iconic looks of artists like Lil’ Kim and Jodeci. The synergy between Blige and Hylton, at the time, had been crucial in creating a distinctive image that reflects both her musical and personal growth.

One standout moment in Mary’s style history is her Billboard Music Awards appearance in 1999. That night, she made others do a double take in an all-black leather outfit, comprised of a sleek leather jacket and matching pants. This outfit showcased Blige’s willingness to experiment with edgier looks. The bold choice reflected the changing landscape of both her music and her style, marking a departure from her earlier tomboy aesthetic to a more sophisticated, daring, and yet feminine persona.

If you’re also going through an evolution and need your outer exterior to match your internal transformation, then channel this look from Blige, and keep scrolling to see where you can get pieces like hers.
