When it comes to Black culture, knowledge is key.

And we tested the knowledge of ESSENCE’s December coverstar Regina King in a recent episode of our video series, The B-Side.

The actress, who is killing the game as superhero Sister Night, on HBO’s Watchmen, made time sit with us and answer our questions.

In the video, it’s revealed that King didn’t always know that the catch phrase, “Bye Felicia” was actually from the 1995 cult classic Friday. She admits that after someone told her the source, she had to get the DVD to verify it for herself.

And for this Thanksgiving, King is more likely to be throwing down in in the kitchen. When asked if she brings the sweet potato pie or the pumpkin pie to the dinner, she made it clear that she makes—not brings—the sweet potato pie. We stand corrected!

If you liked this episode of The B-Side, we’ve got plenty more. One of the most hilarious ones is with our past digital cover star, Lizzo. Even though she didn’t know Angela Bassett’s iconic monologue from Waiting To Exhale, she sang “Soul Glo” from Coming To America, and JAY-Z’s “H-to-the-Izzo.”
