The remake of the classic 1976 film “Sparkle” is set to hit theaters on August 10, starring Whitney Houston making her big-screen return, and she couldn’t be more excited.
“Part of the fun of making this movie is definitely the costumes and the hairstyles,” Houston tells People. “The movie is set in 1963, and we had a great wardrobe, hair and makeup person and I loved wearing the outfits.”
Houston’s co-star Jordin Sparks gushes over sharing the experience with one her icons. “I sang her songs into a hairbrush when I was little,” says Sparks. “Now she’s acting as my mom and scolding me. It was a dream come true.”
People obtained exclusive pictures from the Motown-era story of a Harlem singing group, Sister and the Sisters, who must deal with the fallouts of fame. Houston plays the mother of the three women.
Sparks described her relationship with Houston as “very motherly.”
“If I ever looked like I needed something,” says Sparks, “here she came saying ‘Are you okay?'”
