Actress Taraji P. Henson stopped by the ESSENCE.com’s Live stage at the ESSENCE Music Festival today to introduce her new movie “From the Rough” in which she plays a groundbreaking female golf coach who recruits an international winning team.

Taraji stars in the film and she and co-star LeToya Luckett made a special appearance on stage to answer a few burning questions about the film and let festival goers know they get a chance to see the world premiere today.

“The message of this film is that poverty effects everyone,” says Taraji. “It’s not just something that happens to black people. If you want to succeed it takes a dream. That’s how I’ve done it.”

Taraji plays Tennessee State University golf coach Catana Starks an award winning swimmer who became the first female head coach of an NCAA Division I men’s golf team. Back then Starks made headlines by traveling all over the world to recruit her international dream team. LeToya co-stars as student Becky. “Harry Potter” star Tim Felton plays her love interest in the film.

Taraji, who showed up looking so summer chic, says getting into character was amazing because she was honored to play a strong woman who did something so groundbreaking in her field.

LeToya says working with Oscar-nominee Taraji was a dream come true and she learned so much from the uber talented actress.

Taraji debuted the trailer of the new film while festival attendees lined up to sign up for the screening. Director Pierre Bagley was on hand to explain that not only is the film about pursuing a dream you believe in and overcoming poverty, but it’s also about believing in answers and solutions unseen.

We can’t wait to see the film because the trailer has us very excited to see Taraji and LeToya do their thing. In the meantime, be sure to catch Taraji in ‘Larry Crowne’ — out this weekend.
