Spelman is already one of the leading producers of Black females who go on to earn their doctorates in science and engineering, reports the Atlanta Journal Constitution. Now the all-female HBCU might be the leading producer of Black female engineers thanks to a $1 million grant from oil conglomerate ExxonMobil to go towards the college’s technology-related programs. Six students majoring in science or math-related areas will be chosen annually as ExxonMobil scholars and given mentorship, research training and access to science labs at Spelman and Georgia Tech.
