His trip will come eight days after Chris Harper Mercer opened fire at Umpqua Community College, killing nine.
President Obama will sit down with the families of the nine victims from last week’s deadly shooting at an Oregon community college.
White House officials told NBC News that President Obama will travel to Roseburg, Oregon on Friday, eight days after 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer opened fire at Umpqua Community College.
Shortly after the shooting, President Obama delivered an impassioned speech, urging lawmakers to pass sweeping gun reform laws to put a halt to the constant mass shootings.
“Each time we see one of these mass shootings, our thoughts and prayers are not enough,” he said in his speech. “It’s not enough. It does not capture the heartache and grief and anger that we should feel. And it does nothing to prevent this carnage from being inflicted someplace else in America—next week, or a couple of months from now.”
Further details about the President’s trip have not been released.
