Apparently not everyone is interested in hearing what President Obama has to say. The President is scheduled to serve as the commencement speaker at the University of Notre Dame on Sunday, May 17, 2009, but his appearance is generating protests from the heavily Catholic university, according to the Chicago Tribune. Most of the reaction is rooted in the President’s views on abortion and stem cell research which go against the traditions of Catholic teachings. Several organizations on campus are reaching out to students and alums in an attempt to receive support and one even claims to have received over 60,000 signatures on their online petition. President Obama is expected to receive an honorary degree, making him the ninth president to receive one from the university. He will also be the keynote speaker at graduation ceremonies at Arizona State University and the U.S. Naval Academy in Maryland.–WLW
