It's Official: Hillary Clinton Received More Votes Than Any Losing Candidate In U.S. History

The finalized election results add even more fuel to the fire over the dated electoral college voting process.
It’s Official: Hillary Clinton Received More Votes Than Any Losing Candidate In U.S. History

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has officially made history yet again this year — but this time, it’s for a reason that casts yet another doubtful shadow over the election process. According to the certified final election results as reported by CNN, more Americans voted for Clinton than any presidential candidate who has lost in U.S. history. Specifically, the former Secretary of State earned almost 2.9 million more votes than her opponent Donald Trump, marking the second time she’s outpaced her opponent but still lost the race. Clinton also earned nearly 390,000 more votes than President Obama when she first attempted to nab the Democratic presidential nomination in 2012. In response to the final counts, Trump has continued to ridiculously claim that he would have won the popular vote too had it not been for the “millions of people who voted illegally” for Clinton. Meanwhile, Clinton’s team maintains that the results are even more proof that the U.S. election system is fundamentally flawed, echoing the sentiments of many voters who feel the electoral college practice is dated and does not accurately reflect today’s society.

California Senator Barbara Boxer even introduced a bill to abolish the Electoral College one week after the election, emphasizing the fact that it allows a candidate with the most votes to still come away with a loss. “This is the only office in the land where you can get more votes and still lose the presidency,” she said in a statement. “The Electoral College is an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect our modern society, and it needs to change immediately.”
