Essence, Higher Heights And The Wing Showed What Happens When Women Show Up And Show Out

Essence, Higher Heights And The Wing Showed What Happens When Women Show Up And Show Out
The Wing
By Yesha Callahan · Updated October 23, 2020
November 6th could go down in history as one of the most historical mid-term election nights ever. Although there were major loses when it came to pivotal races in Florida and Texas, the mid-terms proved that women not only showed up and showed out, but they also made history in elections across the country. And on that same night, ESSENCE, Higher Heights and The Wing hosted several hundred women for an election night watch party that will be talked about for days to come. The #BlackWomenLead watch party was hosted by Higher Heights’ L. Joy Williams, and featured Glynda Carr, Tarana Burke, Tonya Lewis Lee, Dr. Brittney Cooper, Rep. Yvette Lee Clark, Aisha Moodie-Mills, Leah Daughtry, Heather McGee, Ziwe Fumudoh, C. Virginia Fields and Tamika Mallory. During the event, panelists discussed the poll numbers as they were coming in, as well as issues affecting Black women this election season. Guests who attended the event noshed on hor dourves and socialized as they waited for the night’s election results to slowly come in. Throughout the night, guests and people watching the Facebook Live stream tweeted their reactions to the panel using #BlackWomenLead and #TheChisholmList, which made the night that more interactive:

As election night ended, attendees celebrated the wins of women like Ilhan Omar, Tish James, Lauren Underwood, Lucy McBath and Ayanna Pressley. With another mid-term season done with, one can only hope that 2020 brings even more wins for Black women in politics.
