Name: Sandi Jackson
Profession: Entrepreneur and philanthropist
Known For: Co-founding BET
Why She Should Make the Cut:
When we heard that the “Real Housewives” was headed to Chocolate City, we couldn’t help but round up our own selects of ladies in the DMV area who we want to see on the show. Here they are:
Name: Andrea Butler
Profession: Supportive wife and mother
Known For: Helping her NBA husband Caron (Washington Wizards forward) curb his compulsive straw chewing
Why She Should Make the Cut: While many professional athletes’ wives come across as entitled and obnoxious, Butler has been known to cry at her husband’s games. Together the two are proud parents of three young children and are often out and about together at the District’s splashiest VIP functions.
Name: Sheila Johnson
Profession: Entrepreneur and philanthropist
Known For: Cofounding BET
Why She Should Make the Cut: Johnson, who made her fortune with her ex-husband Bob Johnson as cofounder of the BET cable network, is a true socialite. And get this: three years ago she married William Newman, Jr., the Virginia judge who presided over her divorce from Johnson. The mother of two ventured into the hotel biz in 2005 and now specializes in the management of independent luxury hotels, resorts and fine food establishments with Salamander Hospitality. Her daughter Paige also made our list.
Name: Susan Rice
Profession: American foreign policy adviser and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
Known For: Blazing trails: Rice is the first African-American woman to hold her U.N. position
Why She Should Make the Cut: Rice was born and raised in Washington, D.C., and attended Stanford University. A former Rhodes scholar, she was a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution from 2002 to 2009. Rice and husband Ian reside in the District with their two children.
Name: Michelle Fenty
Profession: Attorney focusing on global technology
Known For: Marrying the youngest mayor of Washington, D.C.
Why She Should Make the Cut: The mother of three is married to D.C.‘s mayor Adrian Fenty. As the “other” first lady in the District, Fenty is obviously on the guest list of D.C.’s most exclusive affairs. She and her husband met at Howard Law School in the 90’s. In addition to raising three little ones, the Britain-reared D.C. Northwest resident stays busy with charity work for the Capital Breast Care Center.
Name: Paige Johnson
Known For: Horsing around
Why She Should Make the Cut: Both her parents are billionaires and the fact that she’s not photographed dancing on tables in NYC or L.A. nightclubs says quite a bit about her social skills. As a young Black woman who started riding horses at age 6, she’s blazing trails in a field most little Black girls have only dreamed about. She’s the daughter to fellow list maker Sheila Johnson. Sure, she’s not married but doesn’t Bravo always throw a single gal into the mix?
Name: Jaci Reid
Profession: Cofounder of public affairs firm Westin Rinehart
Known For: Rubbing elbows with Washington’s best and brightest
Why She Should Make the Cut: An accomplished businesswoman as well as a national and international philanthropist, Reid and her husband, Morris, regularly associate with the movers and shakers of D.C.’s elite circles. Reid is committed to giving back through various charities including working with organizations such as Dance Theater of Harlem and Fashion Fights Poverty.
Name: Katie Rost
Known For: Making fashion moves
Why She Should Make the Cut: A model who splits her time between NYC and the DMV area, Rost was primarily raised in the District. In addition to gracing the pages of the world’s top magazines, including ESSENCE, she has worked on Capitol Hill as a page for Senator Sarbanes of Maryland. Her work with the Ronald F. Rost Foundation (named in honor of her father) helps those in need on Indian reservations and teaches teenagers the importance of giving back. How’s that for style and substance?
Name: Sharon Holder
Profession: Obstetrician & gynecologist
Known For: Holding down her hubby Eric Holder, the U.S. attorney general
Why She Should Make the Cut: A mother of two teens and one preteen, Holder has delivered more than 500 babies in the D.C. area alone. The southern belle (she’s a product of Mobile, Alabama) actually met her husband in D.C. at a fund-raiser 20 years ago and they jumped the broom just a few months later. D.C. insiders reveal that Holder hasn’t taken new patients for years.
Name: Michel Martin
Profession: NPR host
Known For: Telling it like it is
Why She Should Make the Cut: In addition to her work with NPR, Martin has contributed to The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and received an Emmy Award for her reporting for ABC newsmagazine “Day One.” A native of Brooklyn, Martin graduated cum laude from Radcliffe College at Harvard University and has done graduate work at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. She is married to Washington attorney William (Billy) Martin and their blended family includes four children.
Name: Desiree Rogers
Profession: White House social secretary
Known For: Recasting the White House as the “People’s House”
Why She Should Make the Cut: A former Zulu Queen, Ivy League grad and ex-wife of money man John Rogers, Jr., Rogers is no stranger to the socialite world. A good friend of the Obamas from their Chicago days, she sits front row at the hottest shows during New York Fashion Week one day and then plans poetry jams for the President the next.
