Historic civil rights town Selma, Alabama, has been hit with a 20% unemployment rate in 2009, twice the state-wide rate. The alarming rate–one-in-five people are without work–brings Selma’s Mayor George Evans to the national stage pressing for federal financial from the President Obama. Selma, Alabama, is the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s march from Selma to Montgomery to raise national awareness of the systematic denial of black voting rights in Alabama. The town is an important part of the civil rights movement.
