Today, Lauryn Hill is scheduled to be released from prison after serving three months for tax evasion.
To mark the occasion, Hill released a brand new song. “Consumerism,” much like its predecessor “Neurotic Society,” is a socially conscious song with a message in its lyrics.
The song was part of some material Hill was working on before serving time, the singer elaborated in a brief note on her tumblr page. “We felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it,” she writes. “I haven’t been able to watch the news too much recently, so I’m not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn’t imagine it not being relevant.”
Listen to “Consumerism” and share what you think of it.
