Bernadette Gray-Little is the first African-American to hold the position of chancellor at the University of Kansas, according to The Kansas City Star. The first 16 chancellors at the University of Kansas have all been White men. Gray-Little, 64, is presently the executive vice chancellor and provost at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She comes from a leadership position at one of the top five Association of American Universities research institutions. Gray-Little takes over at KU during difficult financial times. The Kansas Legislature cut higher education funding by 10 percent this year. She is scheduled to begin her new position in August.—BB
