Interior design maven and host of HGTV’s “Myles of Style,” Kim Myles, will answer a question submitted from an ESSENCE.com reader every day. Kim believes that interior design should offer a lifestyle that’s chic, vibrant and attainable for every homeowner or renter. “My goal is to offer simple solutions that help the average person achieve the look that they want without going into debt. There is absolutely no reason for great design to be overly expensive or exclusive,” she declares. Today’s topic: Trashing My Vertical Blinds Dear Kim, Love your show. You always give me great inspiration. I just painted my L/R and dining room a butternut color and it is awesome. However, I have a balcony and I get alot of sun and I’m about to remove my old school vertical blinds. What can you suggest for a window treatment that will not obscure my awesome NYC view but keep the sun from making me wear sunglasses in my own house during the day. 🙂 I am aiming for a Moroccan theme in the space. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. KIM MYLES: Well, I LOVE New York City, and Morocco is pretty fabulous as well–what a great combo! First, I’m thrilled that you’re removing your vertical blinds–they are poison to good design. Second, consider white sheers. The tendency when thinking about Morocco is to lean toward bright silks and heavier fabrics, but remember that it’s a desert environment. Sheer white cotton is perfectly appropriate, simple, and will set off the butternut beautifully. Yes, they’ll ‘soften’ the view when closed, but they won’t obscure it completely. Read more:
