A lot of trolls came for the actress but like her Scandal character she said, "it's handled."
When Olivia Pope bravely decided to have an abortion on ABC’s Scandal last November, Kerry Washington received backlash on Twitter. But like her Scandal persona, Washington shuts it down!
“A lot of the people that may have reacted negatively are probably blocked on my Twitter, because I tend to be a pretty outspoken person when it comes to all kinds of human rights – women’s reproductive rights, immigrants’ rights, workers’ rights, rights for people of color, voting rights,” Washington detailed to HuffPost at the United State of Women Summit Tuesday.
She revealed that she blocks all forms of hate speech from her thread.
“I have no problem with people expressing a difference of opinion… but I do block people who express violence, sexism, racism – that’s inexcusable to me,” said Washington.
“I just think it’s important that we remind ourselves that we live in a country where choice is important, and I was grateful to be able to portray a character who makes a choice and doesn’t have shame about it,” she affirms.
Back in May, Washington announced that she would be taking a “teeny break” from social media, “feeling a call to be a bit more quiet.”
It's time for me to take a teeny break from social media. Feeling called to be a bit more quiet and still. Not sure how long it'll last but don't worry, I'll be back soon enough. This space has become such a community. I'm very grateful. Thank you 😍 I'll be thinking of youz and I'm sending love to you wherever you are… #MermaidGram
However, that hasn’t stopped Washington from being vocal about women’s rights, reproductive rights or domestic violence.
