On this past chilly Sunday morning, the Olympic gold medalist Sammy Wanjiru began the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, two hours, five minutes and 41 seconds later, the 22-year-old Kenyan set the Chicago and American marathon records–by one second. What almost cost him the record-setting second, and the $100,000 in winnings–a wave to the crowd before crossing the tape. Wanjiru, not knowing that he almost blew it, told the Sun-Times: ”I waved the hand because I was very happy.”–JG
