Donda West, the mother of award-winning Hip-hop artist Kanye West died in Los Angeles Saturday following a cosmetic procedure according to CNN. She was 58.
West, who released a book she co-authored called Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Superstar, was also the inspiration to West’s Hey Mama song from of his 2005 album Late Registration. Among the lyrics: “Hey Mama, I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I’m so proud of youƒI appreciate what you allowed for me. I just want you to be proud of me.”
Details on what kind of procedure Donda West was undergoing and the exact cause of death were not revealed by Patricia Green, Donda West’s publicist. A representative to Kanye West’s record label, Island Def Jam, confirmed the death and added that “the family respectfully asks for privacy during this time of grief.”
Kanye and Donda West were photographed and highlighted in a special Mother’s Day package in the May 2006 issue of ESSENCE. In our feature, Kanye wrote a letter to his mother expressing his love:
A lot of times people in my position are so busy that they don’t take time to really chill, but you and I see each other all the time. We go to the movies, we go out to eat. We’re just mad cool.
I know there are many things I could say to you right now, but there’s no way any of it would be the same as what I wrote to you in “Hey Mama.” I wrote that song back in 2000. It took me a month to finish, and at the time it was the absolute best song I had. I even used it to shop my demo. Everything is in that songÑhow much I care about you and how you’ve always been there for me. The first time you heard it, you cried and said it was beautiful.
I was three years old, when you and I moved to the Chi/ Late December, harsh winter gave me a cold/ You fixed me up something that was good for my soul/ Famous homemade chicken soup, can I have another bowl? You work late nights just to keep on the lights/ Mommy got me training wheels so I could keep on my bike/ And you would give me anything in this world/ Michael Jackson leather and a glove, but didn’t give me a curl/ And you never put no man over me/ And I love you for that mommy canÕt you see? I appreciate what you allowed for me/ I just want you to be proud of me/ Hey Mama
Nothing I could say now could outdo that. I don’t want to offend all the other parents, but I’ll put you up against anybody else’s mom. I definitely have the best.
Kanye West’s writing partner Rhymefest spoke of Donda West’s death Sunday on Chicago radio station WCGI, the AP reported.
