The Western Hemisphere’s poorest country is finally receiving international recognition. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton along with several other donors at the Inter-American Development Bank conference in Washington, D.C. pledged to provide Haiti with $324 million over the next two years, according to the Associated Press. Haiti’s Prime Minister, Michele Pierre-Louis originally requested $900 million for what he believes is a country recovering from devastating hurricanes and deficiencies in their education, infrastructure, and health systems. Secretary of State Clinton will be traveling to Haiti on Thursday, April 16 to see the situation for herself. The U.S. is already providing close to $300 million in non-emergency aide to Haiti throughout 2009 but it is not clear on exactly how much of the $324 million came from the Obama administration.-WLW
