While the fashion industry seems to be having a love affair with our new First Lady, the romance is clearly not helping to improve diversity on the runways during New York Fashion Week. The shows this season still look overwhelmingly, almost unbelievably, White, according to Newsweek. In fact, Newsweek argues that Mrs. Obama has merely drawn attention to the current crop of Black models, while designers don’t appear to have done anything to change their casting preferences. Obama fave Thakoon (known for dressing the First Lady at the DNC) and industry vet Carolina Herrera only used one Black model each for their fall 2009 shows.—BB
