Henry Louis Gates Jr. pulled at our heartstrings once again with this latest episode of Finding Your Roots. This week he welcomes writer and producer Tonya Lewis Lee, who’s looking for answers into her family history.

The Harvard professor discovers documented proof that one of the filmmaker’s ancestors fought to free slaves in the 19th century.

“Your third great grandfather fought for the North, fought for the Union in the Civil War,” Gates Jr. tells Lee after she reads off the infantry paperwork. 

“That’s great, that’s really great,” Lee says shedding a tear. “I love that. Makes me really proud.”
