During last night’s State of the Union Address, President Obama laid out an extensive agenda for his next four years in office.
The speech, which lasted nearly an hour, detailed the President’s plans to boost our nation’s struggling economy and bring jobs back to America’s middle class. In addition, he aims to raise the national minimum wage from $7.25 to $9 per hour. “Tonight, let’s declare that in the wealthiest nation on Earth, no one who works full-time should have to live in poverty,” said President Obama to a thunderous applause.
President Obama also announced plans to redesign high schools to better prepare students for the working world. For the youngest Americans entering the education system, he shared plans to provide preschool for kids in low-income neighborhoods. “It is our unfinished task to make sure that this government works on behalf of the many, and not just the few; that it encourages free enterprise, rewards individual initiatives and opens the doors of opportunity to every child across this great nation,” said President Obama.
In addition to a number of important topics, including immigration reform and gun control, President Obama promised that by this time next year 34,000 troops will return home from Afghanistan. “This drawdown will continue,” he said with confidence. “And by the end of next year, our war in Afghanistan will be over.”
