ESSENCE Poll: Is It Time the Supreme Court Weighed in Definitively on Gay Marriage?

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected bans against gay marriage in five states, including Virginia, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and Indiana. According to USA Today, this decision to stay out of the legal battles can lead to the legalization of same-sex marriage in a total of 30 states.

But instead of making a nationwide decision, the Supreme Court stopped short. And according to CNBC, this decision was a surprise, “because most legal experts believed it [Supreme Court] would want to weigh in on a question of national importance that focuses on whether the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal treatment under the law means gay marriage bans were unlawful.”

After our @ESSENCE Debate, yesterday, we wanted to continue the conversation. So what do you think: Is it time the Supreme Court weighed in definitively on gay marriage? Take our poll and let us know.
