Be smart when using the powdery substance.
Whether you’re a fan or not, you’ve probably used dry shampoo a few times by now. Maybe you like applying it after a hard-core gym session, or perhaps you love spraying it on your day 3 twist out for an extra refresh. Whatever your pleasure, dry shampoo might not be as good of a thing as we think.
According to a recent Refinery29 article, the cult-favorite might have more negative effects on our hair and scalp than positive.
“When you’re cleansing, you’re removing dead skin, germs, and bacteria,” says Francesca Fusco, MD, a NYC-based dermatologist. “You’re exfoliating [your scalp], and it’s healthier when you exfoliate. When you’re using dry shampoo every day, it builds up, and it eventually dulls the hair.”
The article also reveals comments from celebrity colorist Rita Hazan who claims dry shampoo visibly dulls the hair. “Formulas are usually made from aluminum starch or corn starch, which appear matte. This makes the color in your hair look less shiny and healthy,” she says.
All in all, if being clean is your number 1 priority, then Dr. Fusco suggests the dry shampoo shouldn’t take the place of regular washing. “The skin on your scalp is an extension of the skin on your face,” Dr. Fusco says. “If your face was oily and dirty, you wouldn’t just powder it. You’d wash it.”
Whatever you decide, just make sure it’s in moderation. Too much of a good thing, is well, bad.
