Color Me Bad

Embrace your multiple personalities with a new hair color for spring; plus, how to maintain your 'do
By · Updated October 29, 2020

Embrace your multiple personalities with a romantic new hair color for spring. We’re talking honey ‘do, mahogany melon, and caramel cravings, but no matter which color you choose, dye wisely. There’s nothing worse than an irresponsible muse. We help keep you inside the lines with these friendly color maintenance tips.

Choose color to match your skin tone. Copper, chestnut brown and blonde compliment complexions with warm undertones. While, burgundy, mahogany and cinnamon work great with those that are cooler.

Match your color with your mane. African-American women have a thick cuticle and the dye requires more time to penetrate. Still, leaving the dye in your too long can cause damage. Try using Semi-permanent or temporary dye treatments.

Do take care of your tresses after a color treatment. We like Clairol Nice ‘n Easy Root Touch-Up ($6.99, Walgreens).

Keep your hairs vibrancy with a moisturizing shampoo like KeraCare Moisturizing Shampoo for Color Treated Hair ($9.59, metrobeauty.com). It contains no lauryl sulphate that can strip the hair color.
To repair damaged locks, we recommend Paul Mitchell Color Protect Reconstructive Treatment ($13.95, beautyencounter.com).

Cater your color to your cut. Hidden highlights that are placed underneath your natural hair color work great with bobs and chin-length cuts. For longer hair, use a contrasting color along the ends to lengthen your nape. Tip: If you don’t want to take the plunge with such a bold color, dye a track of hair that can easily be removed.

Show off you shade. Use a gloss like Matrix Color.Smart Reflective Shine Spray ($12.95, beautyencounter.com) to accentuate your high-notes. This genie in a bottle contains lemon extracts that add shine and protects against free radicals.
