During his weekly address to the nation, President Barack Obama urged Americans not to overreact to the presence of Ebola in America. “What we’re seeing now is not an ‘outbreak’ or ‘epidemic’ of Ebola in America,” he said, “This is a serious disease but we can’t give into hysteria and fear—because that only makes it harder to get people the accurate information they need.” [The Root]

Don’t come for Serena Williams. Russian tennis chief Shamil Tarpischev referred to Serena and her sister Venus Williams as “the Williams brothers” on a Russian talk show. Tarpischev has since been suspended from the Women’s Tennis Association and fined $25,000 for his comments. Yesterday, Serena Williams spoke to press in Singapore about the incident saying: “I think the WTA did a great job of taking initiative and taking action to his comments. I thought they were very insensitive and extremely sexist as well as racist at the same time.” Tarpischev apologized in a statement saying his words were not meant in malice but Serena still thinks his behavior was unacceptable. “I think in this age, 2014 for someone with his power, it’s really unacceptable to make such bullying remarks,” she said.
