‘The Butler’ Reaches $100 Million at the Box Office

In its fifth weekend on the silver screen, Lee Daniels’ The Butler ranked in $5.4 million, bringing its box-office total to $100 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This is a huge accomplishment for Daniels as he joins the ranks of very few African-American directors to have a film reach such success.

The Civil Rights drama, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, also recently won the holiday box office during Labor Day weekend. It dominated the number one spot on the North American box office chart.

The film centers around the life of a White House butler, played by Whitaker, who serves through eight presidential terms. Winfrey co-stars as the butler’s wife and mother of their two sons.

With Whitaker and Winfrey’s stellar performances in the film, critics expect The Butler to be up for several awards this season.
