The City of New York is voting to Do the Right Thing and rename a Brooklyn street in honor of the classic Spike Lee film.
According to NY Daily News, “Do the Right Thing Way” would be the name of a Stuyvesant Avenue between Lexington Avenue and Quincy Street in Brooklyn. The 1989 film was shot on that block 25 years ago.
Lee took to Instagram to announce the big news, “Good Morning People. Great,Great News Today. The City of New York Has Changed Stuyvesant Street Between Lexington and Quincy in The Brooklyn Hood of BED-STUY DO OR DIE AS Do The Right Thing Way.”
The movie that famously dealt with race issues in America and specifically in a Brooklyn neighborhood on a sweltering summer day, was nominated for two Academy Awards and has a spot in the National Film Registry.
Brooklyn’s Community Board 3 voted Monday to support co-naming the street, but the change must still be approved by the City Council. Councilman Robert Cornegy warned that it could be easier said than done but says, “I fully support this effort and will continue to work in every way I can to see the commemoration happen.”
