Wrapping it up isn’t enough for the Catholic church’s top dog. Pope Benedict XVI said on his way to Africa this Tuesday that condoms were not the answer in the continent’s fight against HIV, according to USA Today. The Pope told reporters aboard his plane to Yaounde that AIDS cannot be resolved with the distribution of condoms but rather with a responsible and moral attitude toward sex. Approximately 22 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with HIV, according to UNAIDS. Senior Vatican officials have advocated fidelity in marriage and abstinence from premarital sex as key weapons in the fight against the deadly infection. —BB
