By now, the importance of practicing safe sex has been preached to us ad
nauseam. Now some activists are upset that a popular drugstore chain is
making it harder for minorities to do so. The labor union coalition Change
to Win, claims that CVS stores in communities of color are far more likely
to keep their condoms locked up than in predominately White neighborhoods,
according to the New York Daily News. A fifth of New York City’s CVS stores
keeps its condoms in locked cases, but that jumps to more than half in areas
where most of the residents are minorities, the coalition reported. CVS spokeswoman Joanne Dwyer counters the report and has said that locked
displays are used only in stores “where condoms have been heavily
shoplifted.” —BB
