5 Occupations with a High Chance of Workplace Romance
Love On The Job
In “Undercovers” Boris Kodjoe and Gubu Mbatha-Raw play Steven and Samantha Bloom, former C.I.A. agents who fall in love on the job and try to leave the spy life behind them. While most of us don’t know what it’s like to fly around the world hunting down bad guys, but their workplace romance made us think of a few gigs thathave a high rate of workplace romance. We’ve broken down the hook-up scenarios for bartenders, cops, actors, retail reps and corporate professionals. Here is the good and the bad of on-the-job roamance for each profession.
The scenario: Put two good looking, outgoing people together in a tight space in close proximity to booze and something’s bound to happen. Bartender hook ups usually happen once the bar is closed and things are winding down. The two bartenders have no doubt been flirting shamelessly with one another during their shifts. As they break down the bar, they may head for a quick make out session in the dry goods closet and just like that, their workplace romance is sparked. The good: Bartenders always complain about never having nights off to hang with their significant others. If you work together, especially if it’s in a fun environment, you have the advantage of partying with your boo every Saturday night. Plus, if you have similar schedules, you and your drink-slinging man can have some quality time away from the job on your mutual days off.The bad: Bartending is a high adrenaline occupation. Emotions run high. It’s more likely for your lover to have a jealous spat if you’re talking to a customer for too long or to start a fight with you when he gets “in the weeds.”
The scenario: We read about actors who fall in love while shooting far too often. Actors are characteristically emotional creatures. Getting into character could mean convincing yourself that you are indeed in love with your co-star’s character. As things heat up with love scenes sparks can really fly.The good: Actors have grueling schedules that are hard for others to understand. Dating a fellow actor who knows what the lifestyle is like can be a great comfort. The bad: Once the movie is a wrap and you’re no longer in character, you might find that the passion you felt for your on screen lover passes as quickly as your love for your next costar comes.
Protecting the Law
The scenario: Police officers have to trust their fellow squad members with their lives. Working day-to-day with a partner of the opposite sex could lead to forming a bond that goes beyond the force and into the bedroom. The good: Police officers have high stress jobs, risking their lives and making tough judgement calls every day. It’s nice to know that someone has your back. The bad: As a police officer, it’s important to keep a clear head at all times. If someone wrongs your partner, you may act outside of the realm of your jurisdiction to avenge your lover.
The scenario: Office romances often spark outside of the office, when the whole gang goes for an after-work drink or after two especially hardworking individuals have stayed late working on a presentation together. If you have a good chemistry going at work, it’s tempting to take that chemistry home with you.The good: Bartenders always complain about never having nights off to hang with their significant others. If you work together, especially if it’s in a fun environment, you have the advantage of partying with your boo every Saturday night. Plus, if you have similar schedules, you and your drink-slinging man can have some quality time away from the job on your mutual days off.The bad: The office is no place for emotions. It may be difficult to keep your office flirting to a minimum so that the boss doesn’t catch on. Also, it may be hard to carry out your regular professional duties. What if you have to fire your boyfriend?
The scenario: The relaxed and friendly environment of a retail store can easily lead to workplace romances. Retail employees have plenty of time to get to know each other while they do their various duties on the store floor. Things tend to get heavy during late night shifts when employees are restocking the store. It’s common for two lovers to slip into the stockroom for a quick smooch session. The good: The same casual and friendly environment that retail stores provide also allows you to really get to know someone, especially on days when business is slow. The bad: Your on the floor romance could reflect poorly on your job performance. You may pay too much attention to your lover when you should be attending to customers, which could inevitably cause you or your sweetheart to get the boot.
