How did you meet your man?
I first laid eyes on Percy one evening during my freshman year at Spelman College. After accompanying one of my friends to get some takeout food, I noticed him standing with a couple other Morehouse College guys. Even though we didn’t officially meet that night, I wondered who the guy was that was making everyone laugh. We met again a few weeks later during an Atlanta Football Classic weekend where we were formally introduced. After making pleasantries, we both walked away wanting to know more about each other. Days later we exchanged numbers, and the rest is history, as they say.
Kristilyn, were you looking for love at the time?
I definitely wasn’t looking for love! It was my freshman year in college. I wanted to have fun, meet friends, and enjoy the start of my college career. But when we met, it just felt right. It was easy, and we always just had a good time with each other, whether it was studying, hanging out or going on dates.
What was your first impression of Percy?
He had a great sense of humor and I could tell he was someone that would keep me on my toes. I was kind of used to running guys over and Percy definitely wasn’t having that.
Did you play hard to get?
Not when we first met, but definitely later on. While I knew I liked him, and we had fun, I didn’t really want to be tied down during my freshman year. But within a couple of months, all of that changed.
Describe your most romantic date ever?
Our most romantic date ever would be when we visited Hilton Head. Percy was moving abroad to teach in China for a year, and we decided to take a quick vacation. Percy arranged a dolphin boat ride and it was so amazing. It was just the two us on a boat watching and observing bottlenose dolphins in their natural habit. I loved it!
Percy, what made you fall in love with her?
I fell in love with Kristilyn because of her amazing personality. She lights up a room when she tells you a story and she has the most infectious laugh.
At what moment did you know he was “The One” for you?
When I saw him interact with my family. My family is very small, so naturally we are very close. Percy had no trouble just jumping right in and acting as if he was already a part of the family. He has this great ability to make everyone feel comfortable, including me, and because of that, I just knew.
Did you have a hunch he was going to propose?
Yes, but I just didn’t know when or where. We talked about it before. About a month before we were engaged, we took a vacation to Mexico and I was sure that it was going to happen there. So when he didn’t do it on the trip, I decided to just sit back, relax and let him do it in his own time.
Were you nervous when you proposed Percy?
I wouldn’t say I was nervous, but maybe I was a little anxious to find the right time and place to do it. The decision to spend the rest of my life with Kristilyn was easy.
What are you most looking forward to about marriage, Percy?
I am looking forward to starting the next chapter in our lives, whether that is starting a family, moving to a new city, or buying our first house. With her by my side, I know marriage will be a journey that I would never want to end.
