Found in Transition: Chime Edwards Gives Homemade Solutions to Beat Dryness

Eggs, yogurt and honey are a great combo for a healthy breakfast, but did you know they are also some of the best ingredients to use on your hair to prevent dryness? These foods are not only tasty but they’re an affordable and natural way to moisturize our hair. Here are a few ways items found in your kitchen can moisturize your hair while you’re enjoying your summer break.

By Chime Edwards · June 18, 2014October 27, 2020
01
Raw Eggs

The yolks of eggs are rich in fats and proteins making it naturally moisturizing. The egg whites contain bacteria-eating enzymes, which removes unwanted oils. Use the eggs’ yolks to moisturize your dry and brittle hair. Simply apply the yolk to clean, damp hair. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes and rinse with cool water. It is recommended to use this treatment once a month.

Honey

Honey is a natural humectant, which means it attracts and locks in moisture. Combine 1/2 cup of honey and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Apply the combo to clean, damp hair. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes then rinse with warm water. This treatment helps to replenish the keratin protein bonds in the hair that are damaged by the sun.

03
Yogurt

The protein in yogurt can help mask cuticle damage and split ends, and the acid in yogurt helps to contract the cuticle layer making the hair appear both shinier and smoother. One of my favorite recipes includes, one cup of Greek yogurt, 4 tablespoons of extra virgin coconut oil and 2 tablespoons of pure honey. Put the coconut oil and honey in a cup and place the cup in a bowl of hot water. Wait until the coconut oil melts before adding the Greek yogurt to the mixture. Then combine all of the ingredients together. Apply the sweet mixture to your hair and allow it to sit for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly.
