Super Natural: Afrobella’s Natural Hair Book Must-Haves

The beautiful thing about the modern natural hair movement is the proliferation of information. We’re not in an era where we have to figure things out as we go along. There’s an endless online resource of blogs and videos and photos of all kinds of styles and textures, so you can easily find inspiration and education. And offline, there are quite a few incredible natural hair books that you can and should add to your personal library. Here are my personal picks!

By Afrobella · July 16, 2014October 27, 2020
01
‘Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America’ by Ayana Byrd and Lori Tharps

Hair Story isn’t an instructional manual or a guide to hair care. It is about the deep rooted history of black hair, traced back to the days of slavery, through two world wars, the Civil Rights movement, the Jheri curl era and concluding with the contemporary natural movement

02
‘If You Love It, It Will Grow: A Guide To Healthy, Beautiful Natural Hair’ by Phoenyx Austin

Dr. Phoenyx Austin also brings a professional perspective from the medical field to her natural hair book – her book sheds light on nutrition to benefit hair growth as well as the fundamental differences in afro-textured hair that can help the reader understand what causes hair breakage and hair growth.

03
‘Better Than Good Hair: The Curly Girl Guide to Healthy, Gorgeous Natural Hair!’ by Nikki Walton and Ernessa T. Carter

When it comes to curly hair online, Nikki Walton is a guru to many. Curly Nikki is one of the most popular online hair resources for good reason and her book is full of what her readers love – a dose of therapy, a variety of perspectives, and lots of practical hair advice.

04
‘Thank God I’m Natural – The Ultimate Guide to Caring for and Maintaining Natural Hair’ by Chris-Tia Donaldson

This 2009 book came out mid-way through natural hair’s explosion online, but the information is evergreen and so informative about hair care. Chris-Tia Donaldson now owns her own line of hair products so this book offers insight on the breadth of knowledge required to follow in her footsteps!

Afrobella was the natural hair blogger at AOL’s Black Voices and a writer for Vogue Italia’s Vogue Black website. She has also presented keynotes at several major media expos and seminars.
