Super Natural: Afrobella Says Hair Care is Easy in The Summertime

Summer is here and that means more outdoor fun, more sunshine, more sweat, more fun! Summer presents its own unique hair and beauty issues. For me, summer means a sweaty scalp, hair that’s sun blasted and wind swept and in need of moisture and detangling, and the constant internal and external need for moisture. I grew up in the Caribbean – there is no summer in Trinidad, it’s just dry season and rainy season. I had to learn early how to handle the heat. Allow me to tell you my best tips on how to care and style for your hair when it’s hot.

Low Maintenance, Low Manipulation Styling

Nobody wants to be doing the most in the summer. It’s a good time to rock an effortless hairstyle – think twists or a wash and go, Nothing too complicated or time consuming. It’s hot. Ain’t nobody got time to be spending all that time at the hair salon, trying to keep up a style that isn’t easy to take care of on your own.

Go For An Updo

They say “long hair don’t care,” but you know what? Long hair cares a lot when it’s over 90 degrees out and that hair is sticking to your back and your shoulders and making you hot. Summer is the perfect time for a fly short cut. If you don’t want to go for a chop, then consider learning a few new up-do styles to get that hair up and off your shoulders and neck. There. Doesn’t that feel better?

Condition For The Win
When it’s so hot that you can fry an egg, your scalp needs shampoo to keep it clean and your hair needs conditioner to keep it soft and moisturized. I co-wash more often in the summer, to keep my hair from looking sweaty and limp. I also deep condition weekly to replenish the life that the sun’s trying to wring from my hair.

Oil It Up

If you don’t know about pre-shampoo treatments, now is the time to add this step to your regimen. Using coconut oil or olive oil or a delicious blend of oils on your hair pre-shampooing is a great way to give your hair that extra summer love.
