My Selfie Journey: Autumn Adeigbo

When Autumn Adeigbo was a little girl she threw pennies into every wishing well because she hoped for long hair. From elementary school to her last year at Spelman College, her hair endured perms, weaves, wigs, braids, crochet and even a short Halle Berry haircut. Finally, she decided to loc her hair, and after 10 years of growth, she is proud to rep team #LongHairDontCare. Here is her hair journey.

Autumn’s Journey

My hair is…Natural. I don’t like to say ‘dread locks’ because they are not dreadful, they’re beautiful.

I started my hair journey… While studying a summer intensive course in fashion design at Parsons, I dated a medical student who told me that I would be super bad chick with dread locks. I did it and as my locks grew, for the first time in my life, I saw my natural hair grow from short to waist length. I had finally received my childhood wish.

My current hair regimen includes… Washing 1-2 times per week with a conditioning wash like Wen or As I am. I deep condition once a week with Miss Jesse’s Rapid Recovery Treatment. I also use Shea Yeleen Shea Butter as a moisturizer and to twist and set my locks (it’s hand-made by women in Ghana). For added moisture I use a homemade mix of castor oil, olive oil, vitamin E, coconut oil and I lightly scent it with an essential oil like lavender. Once a month I do a deep conditioning protein mask made of olive oil, avocado oil, castor oil and an egg.

My favorite hair products include…

Wen Cleansing Conditioner in Sweet Almond Mint

As I am Coconut Co Wash

Miss Jesse’s Rapid Recovery Treatment

Shea Yeleen Body Butter in Lavender Honey Suckle

A home made mix of: castor oil, olive oil, vitamin E, coconut oil, and essential oils for added moisture

Super B Complex for hair (and nail) growth

Autumn’s Journey

The secret to having healthy hair is… Taking the time to wholly take care of yourself. Eat well, and drink lots of water. When you love yourself, everything else just works.

My biggest hair challenge is… Falling asleep at night without wrapping my hair.

Autumn’s Journey

I love my hair because… Its natural with no chemicals, its long and beautiful, and its all mine. And when I think back to all those pennies I put in those wishing wells as a young girl, it proves to me that dreams come true.

My hair crush is… Lauryn Hill circa her ‘Miseducation’ album days.
