Missy Elliot Shows Us How To Smooth Out Frizzy Hair

PLUS, WE GIVE YOU THE RUNDOWN ON THE BEST PRODUCTS AND TOOLS FOR GETTING SLEEKER STRANDS.
Missy Elliot Shows Us How To Smooth Out Frizzy Hair
By Jennifer Ford · Updated October 23, 2020

We may have more in common with celebrities than you think. They breathe like us, they scroll through Instagram like us, and they even straighten their hair like us. At least that’s what Missy Elliot made us believe. Over the weekend, the rapper posted a video to Instagram where she’s seen straightening her hair with Guy’s I Like booming in the background. We have the same GRWM routine, except our playlist consist of Missy, Mary J. Blige, Pharrell, H.E.R., Teyana Taylor and a host of other artists who will be performing at this year’s Essence Festival.

What makes us feel even closer to the entertainer is the fact that her strands get frizzy just like ours do. The remedy? Typically, we flatiron our hair and Missy does too.

It’s Da Freaking Weekend🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 somebody come flat iron my hair i don’t even know if I’m doing it right it keep getting frizzy😩😳🤣😂

A post shared by Missy Elliott (@missymisdemeanorelliott) on May 31, 2019 at 10:39am PDT

In the brief clip, the Essence Festival headliner runs a flatiron through her hair to smoothen out the frizz. “It’s Da Freaking Weekend somebody come flat iron my hair I don’t even know if I’m doing it right it keeps getting frizzy,” she captioned the post. Can you relate? Us too. At times it seems like no matter what we do, our hair insists on fashioning itself into a poof. Luckily, we can prevent this from happening with the right products and tools. For your sleekest hair yet, check out the gallery below to see the items you need to add to your arsenal.

01
Spray Your Hair With a Heat Protectant Spray
To keep your hair healthy and not crunchy, spray your strands with a heat protectant. Heat protectants keep your hair safe from heat damage, and this formula seals strands thus preventing moisture and frizz.

02
Use A Rat Tail Comb
After you’ve applied the heat protectant, gently comb through your strands with a fine tooth comb to separate tangles.

03
Use A Titanium Flatiron
Flatirons can be a gift and a curse. Ceramic plated irons tend to snag and dry out hair. Titanium plated flatirons will make your strands stick straight, but also increase the risk for heat damage. To safely and efficiently straighten your hair, opt for flatiron with titanium plates and adjustable heat settings.

Use A Smoothing Serum
After you straighten your tresses smooth on anti-frizz serum to lay down flyaways and give your hair gloss and shine.
