House Of Aama Taps Into Its Intersection Of African And West Indian Cultures

For Fall/winter 2023, mother-daughter duo Rebecca Henry and Akua Shabaka presented a collection that taps into the intersection of their African and West Indian cultures. The ambiance was set to pay homage to family and an old story of a spider on a long journey surviving obstacles and his own foolishness at times. An altar was set up front right next to the curtain opening, where models walked out. It was a dedication to Akua’s father and Rebecca’s family members, as well as photos of them were placed on a table with ornaments of colorful cloth, fruit, and coffee for the well-being of those ancestors.

The show began with whimsical Afro-Caribbean mixes in the background. The first look: a model in a maxi dress with netted details. Some stand-out pieces were a lush green dress adorned in ruffles and a few menswear looks with long denim shorts and matching tops. One of which featured a bedazzled spider web on the corners of the shoulders and back pockets. Mesh dresses in red and black colorways featured the spider motif as well. I’d argue the menswear pieces were the stars of the show this season and might replace House Of Aama’s hero product — the La Siréne dress.

The blend of mature and fun pieces was a perfect balance; some models were showing in cropped tops, short skirts with curved button details, and mesh dresses, while others dressed in classic pieces with pops of color that are true to the brand, like trench coats, satin suiting, and dresses with an “out for tea” energy to them. Overall, the show is sure to have commercial success with a blend of different aesthetics.
