Issa Rae Pays Homage To This 90s Trend

The actress sported a nostalgic style we can't get over.
Issa Rae Pays Homage To This 90s Trend
By Nandi Howard · Updated November 4, 2020

This weekend, the annual Soul Train Awards took place in Las Vegas and celebrities graced the carpet in deep holiday colorways. Standing out from the eclectic bunch was actress, Issa Rae sporting a bright yellow Dion Lee dress. With the dress hem stopping right at her ankles, Rae who was styled by her long-time fashion partner Jason Rembert, accessorized her look with metallic Stewart Weitzman peep-toe heels and Kendra Scott jewelry. But, while Rae’s dress was the brightest thing on the carpet we spotted a tiny detail that gave us pure nostalgia. The actress’s dress featured two-cut outs on the side showing Rae’s toned hips.

Taking us back to the 90s and 00s, a huge trend within celebrities was low cut jeans, skirts, or cut-out pieces to show that awkward hip-bone which can strangely project a chic sex appeal. Artists like Da Bratt and Mariah Carey can be seen early in their careers rocking this trend and the late songstress Aaliyah spearheaded the pack with her sultry 90s looks that still inspire the fashion industry today.

When it comes to what styles are influencing fashion, we are catching many trends from the past making its way back on the runway and incorporated in ready-to-wear collections. Trends like bucket hats, flared denim, and cow print have resurfaced as buzzy must-have pieces, and it looks like Issa Rae may have debuted the latest 90s trend to make a comeback.
