This Designer’s Afro-centric Streetwear Collection Will Blow Your Mind
Jahnkoy Maria

While Kanye West was busy entertaining the world with his “multiracial” fashion show on Roosevelt Island on Wednesday, there were plenty of other Fashion Week presentations worthy of some attention.

Case in point, Jahnkoy Maria, the designer behind the label JAHNKOY, sent a collection of her signature can’t-help-but-stare creations down the runway.

Believe it or not, the Russian-born New York City-based designer is actually still in school — Maria is in the MFA program at the Parsons School od Design. But despite her student status she’s already garned at cult following for her over-the-top designs that are inspired by racial and cultural inequality.

Those themes were definitely put on display yesterday during Parsons bi-annual Fashion show that highlights the best collections from its student body.

Maria presented a range of menswear-inspired designs called The Displaced, which she states was “inspired by the street that taps into the roots of cultures across the globe. The collection is based around the examination of consumer habits with an emphasis on crafts and materials with a focus on the preservation of craft through sustainability.”

We’re particularly drawn to her Afro-centric references and creative interpretation of the African culture. But the clothes really speak for themselves. Take a look…
