Following the panels, workshops, and exciting activations that took place at ENVSN Fest this weekend, performers hit the stage to close out the night. One being, the popular rapper, and songstress Doja Cat.

The 23-year-old has created a consistent career for herself that goes beyond her viral “Moo” bop. She first started to get her buzz through a cult-worthy SoundCloud fanbase in 2013 that later transitioned into a record deal with RCA a year later. Songs like “So High”, “Tia Tamera”, and her most recent hit “Juicy” have become fan favorites. Besides her catchy songs, Doja Cat has also created an eclectic aesthetic that includes her corky fashion finds and eye-catching videos.

ESSENCE got a chance to chat with Doja Cat before she hit the stage at ENVSN Fest. Read below.

ESSENCE: What made you want to partner up with ENVSN?

Doja Cat: My team explained it was for women’s empowerment, and I’m all about that. I mean, that’s what my music ends up coming out as. I never really intentionally do that. I kind of just naturally talk about it all the time. It’s cool that it all sort of meshed and ended up the way it did.

ESSENCE: What’s been the motivation to keep you going in your career?

Doja Cat: I just really enjoy doing it and I’ve always loved making music. I’ve been so busy lately that I’ve been doing press and taking interviews but, it’s okay because, I’m doing it for something that I love. I guess passion keeps me going.

ESSENCE: How do you hope to inspire the next generation?

Doja Cat: I just hope that they get something positive. I’m a bit of a tomboy, but then a girly girl. And I feel like you can be both. Be whatever you want to be.

ESSENCE: How do you manage your career but also having great style?

Doja Cat: I just run to my stylist now. At first, it was a nightmare. I would pick out my outfits and I’d go online. I never went out shopping to get stuff. Now, I just ask my stylist to pull stuff that I could never pull in my life because I’m a regular person. He’s just very good at that.

ESSENCE: What are some of your favorite items in your closet right now?

Doja Cat: I’ve been wearing a lot of mom jeans and comfortable pieces but making it glam by wearing like a gallon of makeup with it.

ESSENCE: When putting together an outfit, what’s one thing you must have?

Doja Cat: Platforms
