In July 2015, comedian Quincy Jones was diagnosed with stage 4 mesothelioma cancer and give one year to live.
Since that diagnosis Jones has had one goal in mind: his own comedy special.
After hearing about Jones’ diagnosis, a friend set up a Kickstarter campaign for the comedian to fund his dream. The campaign went viral and Jones appeared on Ellen twice in one week. During his second appearance, DeGeneres revealed that HBO would be airing Jones’ comedy special, Quincy Jones: Burning the Light.

Over the weekend, the heartfelt trailer for the comedy special dropped and it’s not only about Jones’ stand-up, but a look at the inspiring story behind the special.
In the trailer Jones says, “What I have the ability to do right now is hopefully to inspire people to dig a little deeper and fight a little harder. Someone can watch this an be like, ‘That guy has cancer? That guy got told what he was going to die and this is what he managed to churn out? Well, I have no reason to complain.'”
Quincy Jones: Burning the Light will air June 2 at 10p.m. ET on HBO.
